This 2018 trip to Utah marks our tenth annual Horizon Western Adventure. I hope to maintain our tradition of a rich and diverse experience that includes photographing landscapes, people, architecture, random happenings…and at least one rusty vehicle for Bill Daniel’s special collection. Tentative trip highlights: the spectacular Arches and Canyonlands National Parks; the “Little Grand Canyon” near Castle Dale; belching coal fired power plants; bison in the wild; and the immense Hill Aerospace Museum. Our twilight/night shoot will be at Goblin Valley State Park. (For those who remember Devil’s Garden from a prior trip, co-instructor Dave Koch describes Goblin as “Devil’s Garden on steroids.”) And here's something totally different: shooting dancers (and other stuff) at dusk at the moody Bonneville Salt Flats; Dave will show you how. He'll also guide us to some magical but little known, photo locations. Note: the posted images—of Bonneville Salt Flats, Arches N.P. and Goblin Valley—are Dave’s, who will join us for part/all of the trip to share his expertise. There is group and one-on-one instruction. Three detailed critiques will help take your photos to the next level.

We shoot from early morning until early evening (plus a night shoot). The pace is not strenuous, but we'll do some moderate hiking.Temperatures range from 40—70; occasional rain is possible.

A map of the tentative route starting (and ending) at a Salt Lake City airport hotel can be found by clicking here. Note: the light circles are some of the planned stops for shooting. The dark circles are the anticipated six lodging locations where we’ll stay for this seven night trip. Total mileage is about 900 (130/day).

If the past is a guide, we'll produce some great photography, have lots of adventures (including some unplanned ones), and enjoy the warm camaraderie that participants have always generated over the years. I look forward to seeing many old friends and perhaps some new ones.

Note: Non-photography companions may participate at a 20% discount off the regular registration fee. (Non-photographers do not count toward the 12 person maximum.)
