Arizona contains an abundance of classic western landscapes, and this workshop will cover some of the best. In addition to landscapes, we'll photograph people, buildings (especially abandoned ones) and animals. We start in the rugged, sajuaro-filled Superstition Mountains and the restored “ghost town” of Goldfield, both east of Phoenix; then we move north through the artist colony of Sedona, then to intimate Oak Creek Canyon. North of Flagstaff we explore Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument—a lava-filled area—followed by the 600+ year old Indian ruins at Wupatki National Monument. Traveling through the Painted Desert, we then go to the Grand Canyon. Our return route south will be off-the-beaten track, photographing abandoned stuff and more in such places as Jerome and Gold King Mine & Ghost Town. While we'll be guided by this itinerary, we'll remain spontaneous and flexible, always open to unplanned things that capture our attention. We make every effort to maximize shooting time and minimize driving time. This is an ideal time of year to visit: little rainfall, temperatures neither very hot or very cold, and relatively few tourists. In addition to hands-on instruction about composition, approach, and technique, Steve will demonstrate the use of flash and painting with light. He is also available to work with you on photography issues of particular concern. We'll be active for many hours each day, including many sunsets and some sunrises, but the pace will not be onerous. There will be several critiques that should help take your photos to the next level. If more than 10 students are registered, Steve will be joined by another instructor. Note: To join Steve for three days of scouting immediately before the workshop begins, see below.
