Documentary: The Personal Project - Harvey Stein
Visual storytelling−whether for a single editorial image, for feature stories or books, or for creating a personal record of things we observe−is the focus of this class. Harvey explores ways to execute photos that have a documentary feel, and discusses how to create a story line from concept development to picture editing to sequencing. Students document various aspects Chesapeake City and environs: its colorful inhabitants, gardens, bridge, cemetery, waterway, boats, houses, stores, and marina. In the process of collectively producing a story about the town, the class learns about and practices photographing strangers (including candid and confrontational shooting techniques), controlling exposure and light on the street and indoors, and developing awareness of environment, background and light. Harvey also discusses documentary photography as a means of self-expression.
